In no way was I ever truly a Game Informer afficianado. I wasn’t subscribed or really read all that much since 2011. Sure, I’ve browsed its website and flicked through the magazine holed up at my workplace’s breakroom — someone was subscribed to the mag before closure — but I was never invested in the magazine.
All that said, it holds a huge history of gaming journalism and there was that time before 2011 when my family was subscribed to Game Informer since we were part of GameStop’s rewards program. While it doesn’t hit me hard to see the magazine shutter, it does hit hard seeing the website tied to it close down.
Game Informer has been around since 1991 and its website since 1996. By and large, the publication has a whopping 33-year history in the industry, as crazy as that sounds. But, it’s all come to an end as GameStop, no doubt to cut costs of a department that probably wasn’t making enough money. GI’s website has been scrubbed, its socials have been scrubbed, and YouTube remains up but we’ll see for how long until it falls to the same fate as all its other channels.
